City Council candidates owe it to their community to have carefully considered ALL of these issues.

Karl's Third Ward priorities:

PUBLIC SAFETY

By adding more officers and officer training to enhance our community policing vision; by providing for violence de-escalation personnel and enhanced “mental health” interventions; by providing funding for an additional fully staffed Fire Station #10.

ROADS, SIDEWALKS, & STREETLIGHTS

By advocating for a fair share of city funding for Third Ward roads, sidewalks, parks, and trails, with real results; enhanced street lighting that is energy efficient and is a relatively in-expensive neighborhood security solution.

NEIGHBORHOOD EQUITY & INTEGRITY

By implementing the neighborhood protections outlined in the city’s Comprehensive plan “Columbia Imagined” and guaranteed by the Unified Development Code (UDC); by creating and funding Columbia’s newest City Department of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Karl is a Marine Corps Veteran, husband, father of three, grandfather of two, four-term Third Ward City Councilman and Columbia’s former Mayor Pro Tem. Karl has made Columbia his home for the past 42 years. He holds Experimental Psychology degrees from Southern Illinois University and the University of Missouri, where he retired from cross-disciplinary behavioral and biomedical research as a Research Core Director in the School of Veterinary Medicine.

Karl currently represents the City of Columbia on several panels for the National League of Cities including the Human Development Federal Advocacy Committee, the Race, Equity and Leadership Council, the University Communities Council, and as a National League of Cities University Fellow. He is the recipient of 7 National League of Cities Leadership Excellence Awards. And last year he was also honored to receive the 2020 Columbia/Boone County Muleskinners Margaret Morgett Lifetime Achievement Award for Societal Contributions.

Karl is the former Vice-Chair and 7-year member of the Columbia Planning and Zoning Commission, the former Chair and 13-year member of the Columbia/Boone County Environment and Energy Commission. He is also a 12-year member of Columbia Chamber of Commerce and its Government Affairs Committee.

Karl is proud to say that he is the originator, and has hosted bi-monthly Saturday morning coffee shop “Office Hours” for the past 14 years. His other interests include public radio, having served on the Board of the New Wave Radio Corporation, and has weekly-hosted KOPN's Morning Ayre Program for the past 9 years. Travel, photography, singing with his church choir and with the MU Choral Union are his other passions.
